Privacy policy

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use and protect your personal data when you visit or place an order with The Fat Butcher. We are committed to handling your data in line with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Who we are

The Fat Butcher is a trading name of Food Direction Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 13822023, with its registered office at Double Row, Seaton Delaval, Northumberland, NE25 0PP. Food Direction Ltd is the data controller responsible for your personal data, and is registered with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) under registration reference ICO:00018385529. You can contact us about privacy matters at customercare@thefatbutcher.co.uk.

The information we collect

Order information: when you make a purchase we collect your name, billing address, delivery address, email address, phone number and payment details (your card details are processed securely by our payment providers — we do not store full card numbers).

Device and usage information: when you browse the site we automatically collect information such as your IP address, time zone, browser and device details, and information about how you interact with the site. We collect this using cookies, log files and similar technologies (see “Cookies” below).

How we use your information, and our legal basis

We use your personal data for the following purposes:

  • To fulfil your order — process payment, arrange delivery with DPD and provide customer support. Legal basis: performance of our contract with you.
  • To meet our legal obligations — for example keeping records for tax and accounting. Legal basis: legal obligation.
  • To run and protect our business — to prevent fraud, secure our site, and understand how it is used. Legal basis: our legitimate interests.
  • To send you marketing — where you have opted in, or where you are an existing customer and have not opted out. Legal basis: consent, or our legitimate interests. You can opt out at any time.

Marketing communications

We use Klaviyo to send marketing emails and SMS messages, including abandoned-cart reminders, and we advertise through platforms such as Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google. You can unsubscribe from our emails at any time using the link in any message, reply STOP to our texts, or email us. Opting out of marketing will not affect the service emails and texts we need to send you about your orders.

Cookies and tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies to make the site work, to understand how it is used (for example through Google Analytics), and to measure and deliver advertising (for example Meta and Google advertising pixels). Non-essential cookies are only set with your consent, which you give through the cookie banner when you first visit and can change at any time.

Who we share your information with

We share your personal data only as needed to run our business, including with:

  • Shopify, which hosts our online store;
  • DPD, our delivery partner, to deliver your order;
  • Klaviyo, which powers our email and SMS marketing;
  • Our payment providers, to take payment securely;
  • Google and Meta, for analytics and advertising;
  • Our accountants and professional advisers, and law enforcement or regulators where we are legally required to do so.

We do not sell your personal data. SMS marketing opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third party for their own marketing.

International transfers

Some of our providers (including Shopify, Google and Meta) may process data on servers outside the UK, including in the United States. Where data is transferred outside the UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards — such as UK adequacy regulations or the International Data Transfer Agreement / Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses — so that your data receives an equivalent level of protection.

How long we keep your data

We keep your order information for as long as needed to provide our service and to meet our legal obligations. In practice we retain order and transaction records for around six to seven years to comply with tax and accounting law, even if you ask us to delete your data — after which they are securely deleted. Marketing data is kept until you opt out.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you; to have it corrected or updated; to have it erased; to restrict or object to our processing; to data portability; and to withdraw consent at any time where we rely on it. To exercise any of these rights, email us at customercare@thefatbutcher.co.uk. We will respond within one month.

Complaints

If you have a concern about how we handle your data, please contact us first so we can help. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at any time: www.ico.org.uk, helpline 0303 123 1113.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The current version is always available on our website. Last updated: 4 August 2026.
